Any scientist (in Portugal or abroad) who has attended the 1st cycle of basic education (formerly called primary school) in Portugal can participate in the programme. Scientist is understood as someone with qualifications above a bachelor's degree and whose work includes a research and development component in any area of ​​knowledge, including exact, natural, social and human sciences.

Any teacher can sign up showing interest in hosting the program, especially those with 4th year classes and regardless of their interest in science or the location of the school where they teach.

Participation in the webinar on Science Communication for Children and reimbursement of travel expenses and materials.

It is expected that the scientist will be present at the Science Communication webinar, will be available to prepare a science workshop for Year 4 children, and will be able to spend a whole day implementing the workshop at their old primary school and visiting the municipality.

It is done based on the availability of both the scientist and the school, on a date between November and April that is compatible for all parties.

The scientist has complete freedom to carry out the science workshop they wish, as long as the topic is suitable for the target audience (children in Year 4 of school); they can count on the support of our team to do so.

There is no cost to the children or schools that participate in the programme. Usually, municipalities embrace the programme, and the associated costs are calculated on a case-by-case basis.

Registration is essential, but does not guarantee participation in the programme. Each year, based on the funding obtained, those who have registered are informed about their participation.

Yes, scientists and schools can participate in the programme more than once. Their participation depends on the funding obtained each year.

At the moment the programme is only being implemented in public schools. In the future, it may be possible to cover private schools. Interested scientists can register here and/or contact joana.bordalo [at] nativescientists.org to discuss ways to collaborate or be involved in Native Scientists activities and initiatives.

Yes, in these situations the scientists return to their homeland and carry out workshops at the corresponding 1st Cycle school.
