Through science workshops in a shared heritage language, Native Scientists connects children with scientists from the same migrant community in an attempt to broaden their horizons and foster language development

On the 16th of March, Native Scientists delivered the first workshop in Romanian, adding a further step towards a world with equity and inclusion in quality education. The workshop was done under the Same Migrant Community programme, which brings together children and scientists that share the same heritage language for a science workshop. In doing this, it aims to break the social barrier between science and children from less privileged backgrounds.
The workshop, held at the Tandem Art Space in Heidelberg, Germany, brought together 25 children aged 5 to 14 for a day of hands-on science exploration. They dived into the wonderful world of science: learning about computers and the emerging A.I.; engaging with various representations of DNA, from its intricate molecular structure to a fun, edible version; and observing different biological samples under the microscope. Although complex, the themes were adapted to each age group, making science accessible to everyone.
The workshops sparked interesting questions scientists had yet to think about, such as why plants appear so peculiar under a microscope and whether neurons might have eyes. All children reported their enjoyment in meeting the scientists and learning new things, with 77% of children having met a scientist for the first time in their lives.
The event also reached their enthusiastic parents, who dedicated their Sunday afternoon to join in the fun. Their involvement emphasises the spirit of community that helped this workshop become a memorable experience.
It was a historic moment, the result of the hard work of coordinator Flavia-Bianca Cristian and project manager Arushi Gupta, who, in joint effort, organised an event “for the books”. An honorable mention is extended to the scientists for investing in our mission by conducting the workshop activities. As Flavia-Bianca said, “A heartfelt thank you to the two other scientists who dared to join me in this challenge, to Dr. Vivien Ionasz for her bravery and commitment to the Romanian language, and to Dr. Letitia Parcalabescu for trusting me and making time for us in a really busy schedule!”.
It is successful stories like this that drive us to walk further towards a world where science is not bound by status or background, but free to fill the minds of those who are eager to ask “De ce?” (“Why?”).
About Native Scientists
